For Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) operating a small-scale furniture unit in India, mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification under the Furniture Quality Control Order (QCO) comes into effect on August 13, 2026. However, Small-scale domestic units are eligible for a 50% concession on BIS marking fees.
Earlier, Quality Control Orders were implemented across various products which made it mandatory for all the furniture manufacturers to align their products with notified standards:Work chairs IS 17632: General purpose chairs and stools IS 17633: Tables and desks IS 17634: Storage units (wardrobes, cabinets) IS 17635: Beds IS 17636: Bunk beds.
Although the adoption of QCO in the furniture will stand the test of time as to how it will be adopted and taken up \by the furniture segment.
However, it can be predicted that it is going to be very helpful for smaller & medium scale enterprises. For small scale enterprises in the furniture category, the demand for MDF, Particle board, plywood, laminate, adhesive, edge band, liner laminate, WPC boards etc is expected to improve noticeably.
